Notes
Gala apples provide a naturally sweet flavor, but Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, or Golden Delicious apples also work well.
Peeling the apples creates a smoother finished texture.
Mash the apples lightly if you prefer chunky applesauce.
Reduce the sugar when using especially sweet apples.
Brown sugar can replace granulated sugar for a deeper caramel flavor.
Maple syrup or honey can be used as an alternative sweetener.
Add nutmeg or apple pie spice for more warmth.
A small amount of vanilla extract adds extra flavor.
A splash of lemon juice brightens the applesauce and helps preserve its color.
Let the applesauce cool completely before storing it.
Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Freeze cooled applesauce in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.
Leave a little space at the top of each freezer container because the applesauce may expand.
Thaw frozen applesauce overnight in the refrigerator.
Stir well before serving if natural separation occurs.
