Homemade Oklahoma Onion Smash Burger with crispy beef patties, caramelized onions, melted cheese, and toasted buns.
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 80/20 preferred
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper
1 large white onion, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons butter
4 slices American cheese
4 burger buns
Instructions
1. Season the ground beef with kosher salt and black pepper.
2. Divide the beef into eight equal portions and shape into loose balls.
3. Chill the beef while preparing the onions.
4. Slice the onion very thin.
5. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
6. Melt butter in the skillet.
7. Place beef balls onto the hot skillet and top with onions.
8. Smash the burgers thin while pressing onions into the meat.
9. Cook until crispy and browned on the bottom.
10. Flip carefully and add cheese.
11. Toast the buns until golden brown.
12. Stack the patties onto buns and serve immediately.
Notes
Use cold beef for crispier edges.
Slice onions paper thin for even cooking.
Only smash the burgers once.
Serve immediately for best texture.
