Description

This Pioneer Woman Apple Crisp features tender cinnamon apples under a buttery oat topping that bakes until golden and crisp. It is an easy American dessert that works well for family dinners, holidays, and cozy fall gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

5 cups apples, peeled, cored, and chopped

1/2 cup packed light brown sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup cold butter, sliced

Oat Topping

1 cup quick-cooking oats

1 cup packed light brown sugar

1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup cold butter

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

2. Prepare a 9-inch square baking dish.

3. Place the chopped apples in a large mixing bowl.

4. Add the brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

5. Stir until the apples are evenly coated.

6. Transfer the apple mixture to the baking dish and spread it into an even layer.

7. Arrange the slices of cold butter over the apples.

8. Combine the oats, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a separate bowl.

9. Add the cold butter to the oat mixture.

10. Use a pastry cutter, two forks, or clean fingertips to work the butter into the dry ingredients until coarse crumbs form.

11. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.

12. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes.

13. Remove the crisp from the oven when the topping is golden and the apple filling bubbles around the edges.

14. Let the dessert rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

15. Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Use firm apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or McIntosh.

Combining sweet and tart apple varieties creates a more balanced flavor.

Keep the butter cold until you prepare the topping because cold butter helps create crisp crumbs.

Measure flour by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling the top.

Cut the apples into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly.

Let the crisp cool uncovered so trapped steam does not soften the topping.

To prepare ahead, refrigerate the apple filling and topping in separate covered containers, then assemble just before baking.

Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Reheat in a 325°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes to help restore the crisp topping.

Freeze the cooled apple crisp in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
